The literal meaning of the word ‘Ashura’ means a tenth of the month. However, most famously it is known as the tenth of Muharram, which is the first Islamic Month and it holds great importance because of the tragic event of Karbala that happened in the 7th Century. Your only Muslim Lifestyle App is keeping its users updated with the ongoing historical event with the purpose of educating our audience. As Ashura is near, do you know what it is? If no, no worries you are at the right place!

What is Ashura in Islam?

Ashura marks the death anniversary of Hussain Ibn Ali, a 7th-century revolutionary leader who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. The Ashura is mourned by millions of people across the world to remember Hussain’s brave stand for social justice, against a corrupt tyrant Yazid. The grandson of Holy Prophet (Saww), Imam Hussain was born in 620 AD to a family renowned for their values of love, peace and honour. So, it was natural for Him to adopt compassion, wisdom and integrity.

How did the significant event take place? Well, not long after the death of Muhammad (Saww), the Muslim empire slid into political turmoil and corruption as Yazid usurped power and was slowly beginning to destroy the moral fabric of society. After coming to government, Yazid wanted Hussain to pay him an oath of allegiance in order to gain credibility for his illegal rule. But Hussain belonged to the household that could never bow down to immoral and illegal rule. He chose to make a stand and made uprising. He travelled with his family and seventy-two companions to make it clear that he did not want violence but was prepared to sacrifice for the greater good and humanity.

Yazid came to know about Imam Hussain’s movement and out of fear that he would gain momentum, he dispatched an army of 30,000 to halt Imam and his supporters in their tracks. They were blocked from moving further until Imam Hussain pledge allegiance, but Imam Hussain resisted. Yazid ordered his army to attack and kill Hussain and his supporters, on the 10th day of Muharram which is known as the Day of Ashura! That’s how it came to be known as after that and people still uses the term to reconnect with the event.

10th Of Muharram Significance: A Message of Humanity

Every Muslim must be aware of the significance of Muharram and virtues associated with this holy month. There are countless blessings from Allah Almighty for people who perform good deeds in this holiest month. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is the fasting of Allah’s month of Muharram.” (Muslim) However, the Shia Muslims contradict with this fact that Muslims are supposed to fast on 9th and 10th Muharram but we will not go there to spark the controversry.

Through the sacrifice, Imam Hussain sent a message of humanity to the whole world. He could have saved himself and his family but he did not choose that path since the household of Holy Prophet (Saww) was meant for the greater cause, the cause to protect Islam and to help the community in following the Islamic principles.
