British Muslims have been serving in nearly every field of life including politics. Many Muslims made their way into the major political parties of the United Kingdom, served the parliament and other major political positions like mayors and so.

Currently, there are 4 out of a total of 44 Muslim mayors in the UK including Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, Lord Mayor of Birmingham Mohammed Azim and Tahir Mehmood Malik, the mayor of Luton.

let us have a look at the Muslim leaders serving as Mayors or have served this position in the past.

Directly Elected Muslim Mayors in UK.

Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London):

Sadiq khan, member of Labour Party, a Muslim British politician and a former member of the parliament is the current Mayor of London serving since 2016.

Rokhsana Fiaz (Mayor of Newham)

Another Muslim and first directly elected female mayor of any London Borough, Rokhsana Fiaz is currently serving as a Mayor of Newham since 2018. Rokhsana is also a member of the Labour Party.

Mohammad Lutfur Rahman (Mayor of Tower Hamlets)

Lutfur Rahman, Bangladesh-born Muslim, a former Lawyer, and a British politician was the first directly elected Mayor of Tower Hamlets who served from 2010 till 2015.

Below are discussed some of the Lord mayors of a few boroughs and cities who were Muslims.


Mohammed Azim is the current Lord Mayor of Birmingham (2019) and a Muslim. Muslims who had previously served as mayors are as following.

Kirklees council just had one Muslim Mayor in 2008 named Kamran Hussain of Liberal Democrats and served as mayor for Kirklees Counsel from 2008 to 2009.


Mouhammad Ajeeb was the first Asian (Pakistani) Muslim to become the lord mayor of Bradford. He served from 1985-1986. After him, Ghazanfar Khaliq was the next Muslim who became the lord mayor of Bradford in 2001. A list of all Muslims who served as Lord Mayor of Bradford is given below.

Ahmad Riaz was the first Muslim Mayor of Oldham who served as a mayor from 2002 to 2003. After him, Muslims elected as Mayors of Oldham are listed below as per Oldham Council.

Currently the Mayor of Blackburn is not Muslim. However, in the past, there were three Muslim Mayors for the Borough of Blackburn.

  • Zamir Khan (2012-13)


Oxford had recently two Muslim Mayors. Mohammed Altaf Khan from 2016  to 2017 and Mohammad Abbasi from 2014 to 2015.


Mohammed Iqbal was the only Muslim Mayor of leads from 2006-07, says Wikipedia.


Magid, also known as Magid Mah, A Somalian British Muslim of Green Party of England and Wales has served as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield from May 2018 to May 2019.


According to Rochdale Borough Council, Following Muslims were elected as Lord Mayors of Rochdale.
